Abstract

This article presents a critical, thematic, and stylistic study of Allama Muhammad Iqbal’s Urdu poetry as represented in his four major poetic collections: Bang-e-Dara, Bal-e-Jibril, Zarb-e-Kalim, and Armaghan-e-Hijaz. It traces the gradual development of Iqbal’s poetic thought from his early engagement with conventional ghazal, romantic expression, patriotism, and nature poetry to his mature philosophical, spiritual, and civilizational concerns. The study shows that Iqbal transformed Urdu poetry into an effective medium for intellectual awakening, moral reconstruction, collective consciousness, and purposeful action. Special attention is given to the evolution of such central concepts as selfhood, love, struggle, spiritual freedom, Islamic universalism, the revival of the Muslim community, and the relationship between the individual and society. The article also examines Iqbal’s critique of territorial nationalism, colonial domination, intellectual servitude, materialism, modern Western civilization, and passive interpretations of religion. It argues that Iqbal’s poetry does not merely lament the decline of the Muslim world; rather, it offers a dynamic message of hope, renewal, self-realization, and creative action. The study further highlights Iqbal’s artistic innovations in both the ghazal and the poem. His distinctive vocabulary, powerful symbolism, philosophical imagery, musical expression, rhetorical force, and experimentation with poetic forms gave Urdu poetry a new intellectual and aesthetic direction. It concludes that Iqbal’s Urdu poetry constitutes a coherent poetic vision in which philosophy, spirituality, history, politics, and artistic excellence are integrated into a comprehensive programme for the reconstruction of the individual, the Muslim community, and human civilization.
