The Process of Revision and Deletion in Iqbal’s Poetry: A Study of Artistic Consciousness, Intellectual Evolution, and Poetic Excellence

Abstract

This research article examines the process of revision, correction, selection, and deletion in Allama Muhammad Iqbal’s Urdu poetry, with particular emphasis on its literary, aesthetic, and intellectual significance. The study argues that Iqbal’s poetic greatness was not merely the result of spontaneous inspiration but of sustained artistic discipline, critical self-evaluation, and rigorous revision. By analyzing the corrections made in Bang-e-Dara, Bal-e-Jibril, Zarb-e-Kalim, and the Urdu section of Armaghan-e-Hijaz, the article highlights Iqbal’s deep concern for verbal precision, thematic coherence, musicality, imagery, rhetorical force, and philosophical clarity. The research notes that 968 verses in Iqbal’s Urdu poetry underwent revision, while a large number of verses were excluded from the accepted canon, indicating his uncompromising commitment to poetic excellence. The article further shows that Iqbal’s revisions were generally not aimed at changing his fundamental ideas, but at refining expression, strengthening artistic impact, removing ambiguity, and aligning poetic language with his broader spiritual and reformative mission. Through this process, Iqbal emerges not only as a great poet and thinker but also as a highly conscious critic of his own art. The study concludes that Iqbal’s revisions provide an important critical framework for understanding his poetics, his theory of art, and the evolution of his creative personality.
