Abstract
Allama Iqbal declared the scholastic arguments ineffective for affirming existence of God and wrote in The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam that the arguments given for affirming existence of God are effective only when it can be proved that thought and being are ultimately one. Allama Iqbal declared the unity of thought and being as inevitable that if the unity of thought and being cannot be proved, then the indispensability of the concept of a Being possessing Absolute Thought for the existence of the universe cannot be proved. According to Allama Iqbal, human ego works in two ways: efficient self and appreciative self. Efficient self is related to the outside of our self while appreciative self is related to our inner self. Efficient self is used to seeing the facts in their components, whereas in appreciative self all the details exist as a unity. In other words, we can experience the unity of thought and being in appreciative self. The experience of unity of thought and being in appreciative self helps us to understand the concept of Pure Duration. Various thinkers have written on the unity of thought and being, but Muslim Sufis have explained this concept with greater clarity. Modern scientific research also explains this concept.
