Abstract

Earth-rootedness and freedom from Earth-rootedness is closely related to Allama Iqbal's concept of self. Allama Iqbal first used the term of Earth-rootedness in his Lectures, after that we find this term in Western writers as well. According to Allama Iqbal a nation adopting Earth-rootedness can't think free from the bondages of homeland and race. In other religions, such as Buddhism, animal desires, and sufferings are attributed to Earth-rootedness. Allama Iqbal derived the concept of Earth-rootedness from the Holy Qur'an, where the Israelites preferred vegetables grown on the ground over Mann and Sylvie. Allama Iqbal has used the metaphor of Shaheen in his poetry to indicate freedom from Earth-rootedness. Allama Iqbal has taught freedom from Earth-rootedness by associating the concept of nation with religion instead of associating it with region, language or race.
