Abstract

Mirza Ghalib is one of the founders of modern Urdu ghazal. His poetry has an irresistible charm and beauty. It has wit, irony and a wealth of human experience. His diction with a sweet, simple and sometimes complex and pregnant with meaning style leads its reader to multiple interpretations. The idea that life is a continuous struggle which can end only when life itself ends is a recurring theme in his poetry. Ghalib was not only a poet, but he was also a keen observer of life which reflects in his prose. His letters are a description of the political and social environment of his time. Similarly different shades of life described in his poetry make him poet of all times. This article explains this aspect of Ghalib's poetry in the light of a verse of Iqbal.
