Abstract

The word tasawuf which is used for mysticism and Islamic traditions, though is not found in early Muslim literature but it is the synonym of term ehsan. Later on when the followers and the compilers of ehsan chapter were organized in the form of community they adopted the word tasawuf for it. There are many sources and origins which are linked with this word. The features like tawaqul, raza, tafweez, toba, sabar, ebadat, zohad and many others were essential to be achieved as a permanent character traits by the Muslim mystics. Tasawuf remains an important and significant part of society when it struggles to develop the purity of intention and action in life. But when it tries to transform into philosophy, this is the point where Iqbal differs. Iqbal also says that the spiritual need of modern mind can be fulfilled by Muslim mysticism if it is adopted in modern perspective.
