Abstract

Ijtehad is an important concept in the social reconstruction of Allama Muhammad Iqbal. Iqbal was the first person in our near past who raised the voice for Ijtehad and called it a living principle of movement in the structure of Islam. His call created a long lasting echo in our intellectual and social circles. Iqbal emphasized the need of collective efforts for re-codification and revisiting the legal structure of Islam. He pointed out the need of gathering the traditional jurisprudential wisdom and modern legal mind of Muslim society to make Islamic law effective in society. In sub-continent and in other parts of Muslim world many legal and research institutions are working in continuity of Iqbal's concept of Ijtehad.
