Abstract

This essay is regarding a poem of Iqbal, the title of which is "Zauq o Shaouq", included in his poetic book Bal e Jibreel. The essay says that if the historical background is kept in mind, the complexities and semantic dimensions of the poem reveal themselves in a better way. Furthermore, this poem has another quality which makes it distinct from other poems of Urdu literature, its motive, subject matter and ultimate objective are all one and same. Moreover, this poem is also unique from other poems of Iqbal. The motive of this poem is "Zauq" and its related attributions. The internal matter is also Zauq o Shaouq and the conclusion is also the same i.e. taste. The historical background which is the real cause for creation of this poem, has been explained in the poem. Apart from that, analysis of the pros of art of the poem has also been presented.
