Abstract

Allama Muhammad Iqbal (1877 – 1938) even before he went to Europe and got himself acquainted with German language and literature, was well aware of the greatness of German poet and thinker Goethe whose magnum opus Faust is famous for universal appeal. At the age of about 65, he came under the influence of Persian poets like Sadi, Hafiz, Nizami and Jami whose works inspired him to write an oriental Diwan, West – Eastern Diwan, which gave a new strength to the oriental movement of his times. After about a century, Allama Iqbal wrote, in response to West – Eastern Diwan, one of his best books of Persian poetry Payam – e – Mashriq in 1923. Not much is known about the actual contents of Goethe’s Diwan in this region of the world. Thanks to a Persian translation of the Diwan, the contents of the Diwan are being commented upon in this article, with a brief comparison (for the first time) between East – Western Diwan and Payam – e – Mashriq.
