Abstract

This article consists of annotated footnotes and comments on the preface to Payam-i-Mashriq (Message from the East). Allama Iqbal wrote his poetry book "Payam-i-Mashriq " in response to West–östlicher Divan by Goethe, a well-known German literary figure and national poet of Germany. There is no denying in the fact that most of the literature of the West in general and German classical literature in particular is heavily influenced by Eastern poetry and literature. Iqbal wanted to work on it, but the relevant material was not available in India, due to which he could not work as intended on the influence of Eastern poets on Western literature. What Iqbal has written in this regard; he was forced to rely on secondary sources. Iqbal has expressed his wish in the preface of Payam-i-Mashriq and also explained the reason for its unfulfillment. Drawing attention to the same idea of Iqbal, explanatory footnotes and comments on the preface of Payam-i-Mashriq have been written in the article under study.
